Thiruppaavai continued

 Periyaazhvaar spent his wealth for Srivillipputhoor's temple . He spent his life by doing the day to day activities in the temple's garden and making and offering garlands for the God.

One day at sunrise, when he was doing his gardening work near the thulasi plants, he felt his shovel hitting a box. He was astonished to see a  beautiful baby girl inside the box. The baby was bright with a smiling face. He believed that the baby was given by the motherland (boomidevi) and was very happy. That day was Aadi(Aug- Sep) month and the star was Pooram.He named the baby as KODHAI , ie. KO - boomi and THA - given. He brought up the girl with lot of affection and love.

(3) நீத்தார் பெருமை (Greatness of Renunciates)


Verse 21 The scriptures exalt above every other good The greatness of virtuous renunciates.


ஒழுக்கத்து நீத்தார் பெருமை விழுப்பத்து
வேண்டும் பனுவல் துணிவு.
(ozhukkaththu neethaar perumai vizhuppaththu
vendum panuval thunnivu.)


Verse 22 Attempting to speak of the renunciate's magnitude Is akin to measuring the human multitudes who have ever died.

துறந்தார் பெருமை துணைக்கூறின் வையத்து
இறந்தாரை எண்ணிக்கொண் டற்று.
(thurrandhaar perumai thunnaikkoorin vaiyaththu
irrandhaarai ennikkonndatru.)


Verse 23 Behold those who have weighed the dual nature of things and followed The renunciate's way. Their greatness illumines the world.

இருமை வகைதெரிந்து ஈண்டுஅறம் பூண்டார்
பெருமை பிறங்கிற்று உலகு.
(irumai vagaitherindhu eendu aram poonndaar
perumai pirrangitru ulagu.)


Verse 24 He whose firm will, wisdom's goading hook, controls his five senses Is a seed that will flourish in the fields of heaven.
உரனென்னும் தோட்டியான் ஓரைந்தும் காப்பான்
வரனென்னும் வைப்பிற்கோர் வித்து.
(uranenum thOttiyaan Oraindhum kaappaan
varanennum vaippiRkOr vithu.)


Verse 25 So great is the power of those who subdue the five senses, even Indra, Sovereign of spacious heaven's celestials, suffered their curse.

ஐந்தவித்தான் ஆற்றல் அகல்விசும்பு ளார்கோமான்
இந்திரனே சாலுங் கரி.
(Indhavithaan Attral agalvisumbu LLaarkOmaan
indhirane saalung kari.)


Verse 26 The great ones are they who can dispatch the most Difficult tasks; the small ones are they who cannot.

செயற்கரிய செய்வார் பெரியர் சிறியர்
செயற்கரிய செய்கலா தார்.
(seyaRkariya seivaar periyar siRiyar
seyaRkariya seikalaa dhaar.)


Verse 27 Touch, taste, sight, smell and hearing-
He who controls these five magically controls the world.

சுவைஒளி ஊறுஓசை நாற்றமென ஐந்தின்
வகைதெரிவான் கட்டே உலகு.
(suvaiolli ooruosai naatramena indhin
vagaitherivaan kattE ulagu.)


Verse 28 Their own secret sayings reveal to the world The greatness of men whose words prove prophetic.

நிறைமொழி மாந்தர் பெருமை நிலத்து
மறைமொழி காட்டி விடும்.
(niRaimozhi maandhar perumai nilaththu
maRaimozhi kaatti vidum.)


Verse 29 It is impossible to endure even a moment's wrath of those Who have scaled and stand upon the mountain called virtue.

குணமென்னும் குன்றேறி நின்றார் வெகுளி
கணமேயும் காத்தல் அரிது.
(GuNamennum kundrEri nindraar vegulli
kaNamEyum kaaththal aridhu.)


Verse 30 Renunciates are called the priestly ones For they are clothed in robes of compassion for all life.
அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர்மற் றெவ்வுயிர் க்கும்
செந்தண்மை பூண்டொழுக லான்.
(AndhaNar enbOr aRavOrmatr evvuyir kkum
sendhannmai poonozhuga laan.)

AANDAAL

When we think about Thiruppavai, the first person we remember is Aandaall. So, let's talk about Aandaall first and then about Thiruppaavai.


In those days, whoever sang in praise of Sriman Narayanan and about his goodness were called Aazhvaargall. There are 12 Azhvaars in all. They sang the "Divya Prabandham". The first part of Divya Prabandham is " Thiruppallaandu", sung by "Vishnuchithar". He lived nearly 1100 years back. Since he was 
very famous among the Azhwaars, people worshipped him as "Periyaazhwaar".

(2) வான்சிறப்பு -( The Importance of Rain) (vaan sirappu)

Verse 11 It is the unfailing fall of rain that sustains the world. Therefore, look upon rain as the nectar of life.

வான்நின்று உலகம் வழங்கி வருதலால்
தானமிழ்தம் என்றுணரல் பாற்று

(vaan nindru ulagam vazhangi varuvadhalaal 

thaanamizhdham endrunnaral paatru)

Verse 12 Rain produces man's wholesome food; And rain itself forms part of his food besides.

துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய துப்பாக்கித் துப்பார்க்குத்
துப்பாய தூஉம் மழை

(thuppaarkku thuppaaya thuppaakkith thuppaarkkuth 

thupaaya thoovum mazhai)

Verse 13 Though oceanic waters surround it, the world will be deluged By hunger's hardships if the billowing clouds betray us.

விண்நின்று பொய்ப்பின் விரிநீர் வியனுலகத்து
உள்நின்று உடற்றும் பசி
(vinn nindru poippin virineer viyanulagaththu 

ullnindru udatrum pasi)

Verse 14 When clouds withhold their watery wealth, Farmers cease to pull their ploughs.

ஏரின் உழாஅர் உழவர் புயல்என்னும்
வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால்.
(Arin uzhaa ar uzhavar puyal ennum 

vaari vallankundrik kaal)

Verse 15 It is rain that ruins, and it is rain again That raises up those it has ruined.

கெடுப்பதூஉம் கெட்டார்க்குச் சார்வாய்மற் றாங்கே
எடுப்பதூஉம் எல்லாம் மழை.
(keduppadhoo um kettaarkkuch saarvaay matraange

eduppadhoo um ellaam mazhai)

Verse 16 Unless raindrops fall from the sky, Not even green grass will be seen rising from the earth. 

விசும்பின் துளிவீழின் அல்லால்மற் றாங்கே
பசும்புல் தலைகாண்பு அரிது.
(vivisumbin thullivizhin allaal matraange

pasumpul thalaikaannbu aridhu.)

Verse 17 The nature of oceans, though vast, would diminish, If clouds ceased to take up water and give back rain's gifts. 

நெடுங்கடலும் தன்நீர்மை குன்றும் தடிந்தெழிலி
தான்நல்கா தாகி விடின்.
(nedunkadalum thanneermai kundrum thadithezhili

thaan nalka thaagi vidin.)

Verse 18 Should the heavens dry up, worship here of the heavenly ones In festivals and daily rites would wither. 

சிறப்பொடு பூசனை செல்லாது வானம்
வறக்குமேல் வானோர்க்கும் ஈண்டு.
(sirrappodu poosanai sellaadhu vaanam

varrakkumel vaanorkkum eenndu.)

Verse 19 Unless the heavens grant their gifts, neither the giver's generosity Nor the ascetic's aloofness will grace this wide world.

தானம் தவம்இரண்டும் தங்கா வியன்உலகம்
வானம் வழங்கா தெனின்.
(thaanam thavam irendum thangaa viyanulagam

vaanam vazhangaa thenin.)

Verse 20 No life on earth can exist without water, And the ceaseless flow of that water cannot exist without rain. 

நீர்இன்று அமையாது உலகெனின் யார்யார்க்கும்
வான்இன்று அமையாது ஒழுக்கு.
(neerindru amayaadhu ulagenin yaaryaarkkum 

vaannindru amayaadhu  ozhukku.)

Kadavul Vazhthu

I have posted the first 10 kurals from Kadavul Vazhthu. I tried to transliterate the  kurals , but it looks like it dint come out properly. Please bear it.

Verse 1 "A" is the first and source of all the letters. Even so is God Primordial the first and source of all the world.
அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி
பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.
(Agara mudhala ezhuthellaam aadhi
bagavan mudhatre ulagu.)


Verse 2 What has learning profited a man, if it has not led him To worship the Good Feet of Him who is pure knowledge itself?
கற்றதனா லாய பயனென்கொல் வாலறிவன்
நற்றான் தொழாஅர் எனின் .



(Katradhanaa laaya payanenkol vaalarivan
natraan thozha ar  enin.)


Verse 3 The Supreme dwells within the lotus of the heart. Those who reach His Splendid Feet dwell endearingly within unearthly realms.
மலர்மிசை ஏகினான் மாணடி சேர்ந்தார்
நிலமிசை நீடுவாழ் வார் .

(Malarmisai  ekinaan maannadi serndhaar
nilamisai needuvaazh vaar. )




Verse 4 Draw near the Feet of Him who is free of desire and aversion. And live forever free of suffering.
வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலானடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு
யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல.

(Venndudhal venndaamai ilaanadi serndhaarkku
yaanndum idumbai ila.)



Verse 5 Good and bad, delusion's dual deeds, do not disturb Those who delight in praising the immutable, worshipful One.
இருள்சேர் இருவினையும் சேரா இறைவன்
பொருள்சேர் புகழ்புரிந்தார் மாட்டு

(Irullser iruvinaiyum sera irraivan
porullser pugazhpurindhaar maattu.)



Verse 6 A long and joyous life rewards those is theirs who remain firmly On the faultless path of Him who controls the five senses.
பொறிவாயில் ஐந்தவித்தான் பொய்தீர் ஒழுக்க
நெறிநின்றார் நீடுவாழ் வார்

(Porivaayil aindhaviththaan poidheer ozhukka
nerinindraar needuvaazh vaar)



Verse 7 They alone dispel the mind's distress Who take refuge at the Feet of the Incomparable One.
தனக்குவமை இல்லாதான் தான்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
மனக்கவலை மாற்றல் அரிது.

(thankkuvamai illaadhaan thaanserndhaark  kallaal
manakkavalai maatral aridhu.)



Verse 8 They alone can cross life's other oceans who take refuge at the Feet of the Gracious One, Himself an ocean of virtue.
அறவாழி அந்தணன் தான்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
பிறவாழி நீந்தல் அரிது.

(Arravaazhi andhannan thaanserndhaark kallaal
piravaazhi neendhal aridhu.)


Verse 9 The head which cannot bow before the Feet of the Possessor Of eight infinite powers resembles eyes which cannot see.

கோளில் பொறியில் குணமிலவே எண்குணத்தான்
தாளை வணங்காத் தலை.



(kollil poriyil gunamilave enngunnaththaan
thaallai vanangaath thalai.)


Verse 10 The immense boundless ocean of births can be crossed, but not Without intimate union with Infinity's Holy Feet.
பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார்
இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார்.


(Piravip perungadal nendhuvar  neendhaar
irraivan adiseraa dhaar. )

Under the topic, thirukural, i will be  posting the kurals and their meaning.

Thiruvalluvar , a person from weaver community wrote Thirukkural,

Thirukkural has 133 adhikarams with 10 couplets in each adhikaram so it consists of  1330 couplets in the form of kural venba , ie, four words in the first line and 3 words in the second line.
